China landslide buries at least 44 people with hundreds evacuated | World | News


A landslide in mountainous China has reportedly buried at least 44 people with hundreds more evacuated.

State broadcaster CCTV reported the landslide in southwestern China’s Yunnan province. Disaster struck just before 6am local time on Monday (9.50pm Sunday GMT).

The landslide is thought to have taken place in the village of Liangshui, under the town of Tangfang in the Zhenxiong County. Rescue efforts are said to be underway to find victims buried in 18 houses.

There are no current reports of deaths or injuries. And the cause of the landslide is not immediate known.

Although it is thought to have snowed in the region over the weekend.

“Forty-four people from 18 households were buried according to preliminary investigation,” reported CCTV.
