Cruise passengers issued travel warning for popular destination | Cruise | Travel

The Bahamas is a top destination on Caribbean cruise holidays but the USA has now warned holidaymakers visiting the island to be cautious.

The US embassy released a new security and travel warning as the country’s capital city has reported 18 murders since the start of 2024.

Embassy staff said: “The US Embassy in Nassau advises US citizens to be aware that 18 murders have occurred in Nassau since the beginning of 2024.

“Murders have occurred at all hours including in broad daylight on the streets. Retaliatory gang violence has been the primary motive in 2024 murders.”

The country has put the Bahamas on its ‘Exercise Increased Caution’ list and warned travellers to keep a low profile.

The warning added: “Violent crime, such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults, occur in both tourist and non-tourist areas.

“Be vigilant when staying at short-term vacation rental properties where private security companies do not have a presence.”

The USA also issued a warning about boat trips as it said some “watercraft may be poorly maintained”.

Cruise passengers often take part in boat trips and watersports while visiting the Bahamas.

The warning said: “Watercraft may be poorly maintained, and some operators may not have safety certifications.

“Always review and heed local weather and marine alerts before engaging in water-based activities.”

A female tourist was killed by a shark in December while she was paddle boarding close to the capital, according to an Associated Press report.

The UK Government advises tourists not to travel on foot outside the main tourist areas and beaches.

It also warned people to avoid unlit areas and travel in groups after dusk. In the event of a robbery, tourists shouldn’t resist as robbers may have concealed weapons.
