Europe’s underrated cheap beach holiday that Simon Calder loves | Travel News | Travel

Spain might be top of most Britons’ lists when it comes to beach holidays but there are plenty of European hidden gems to discover.

According to Simon Calder, one of Europe’s best bargain beach destinations is Sopot on Poland’s Baltic coastline.

Despite its northern European location, Sopot’s beaches could be confused for the Caribbean on a sunny day.

The travel expert told ITV: “Absolutely beautiful resort, it’s also incredibly good value. Prices are back to the 1990s, whatever you’re paying in Spain, Italy, basically halve it.

“You’ll be paying far, far less for everything and there’s loads of cheap flights. It’s not the warmest sea you’re going to have, it’s not the Mediterranean but on the other hand, in July and August, it’s absolutely fantastic.”

Sopot Beach is famous for its white sand and the beach is an easy stroll from affordable cafes and restaurants.

‘Frank T’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “I arrived in Sopot on September 1 and it was a perfect time. The big crowds were gone, the weather was perfect, the beaches were clean and Sopot itself was beautiful and relaxing.”

While Sopot sells traditional beach treats such as ice cream, don’t miss out on sampling some Polish delicacies while there.

Pierogi are Poland’s signature dish. The filled dumplings have various fillings such as meat, cheese or vegetables. Watch out for sugary chocolate-filled innovations.

Sopot is under half an hour’s drive from Gdansk so tourists can easily combine city and beach on a trip.

Gdansk is one of Poland’s prettiest cities and its old town is the ideal destination for a spot of souvenir shopping.
