Ghana players turned on by angry journalists at AFCON as police called | Football | Sport
Ghanaian journalists booed and jeered at their national team as they left the Alassane Ouattara Stadium after throwing away a two-goal lead to draw with Mozambique in a crucial AFCON group game. The dropped points put the Black Stars on the verge of an early exit from the tournament.
Ghana led 2-0 thanks to a Jordan Ayew brace from the penalty spot, however, two stoppage-time goals from Mozambique’s Geny Catamo and Reinildo Mandava ensured the points would be shared. Ghanaian goalkeeper Richard Ofori came under fire for needlessly palming a loose ball out of play that had already cleared his goal mouth.
Mozambique scored from the resulting corner with Mandava heading home a dramatic last-gasp equaliser. Ghana are now as good as out of the Africa Cup of Nations with their two points unlikely to be enough to secure a knockout stage place as one of the four best third-place finishers.
National media were outraged by the dismal display and let their team know what they thought of them as they hooted at the players from the mix-zone area. Many Ghanaian players were seen bowing their heads in shame as they walked onto the team bus without answering questions.
The police were called to calm down the tense situation while the media demanded answers for what they had just seen. One outraged journalist, Saddick Adams, posted a video of the post-match altercation to his X account, with the caption: “CAF security has called for reinforcement.
“The media just want to meet the team. We are not leaving until they come. We won’t tolerate this level of embarrassment and wastage again. If powers won’t do, we will let them know how it feels to play for this team. If you hear any of us arrested, we will be safe.”
An earlier video shows Ghanian media waiting in the mixed zone to speak to the players and coaches about the game but they were reportedly not given the opportunity to do so leading to widespread outrage.
Adams added: “The level of angst here among the Ghana media, I only pray these group do not ever pass the mixed zone. We have heard they won’t come but we will find them. We swear.” Another video showed armed police descending on the raucous Ghanian media.
