London crime: Man ‘armed with a crossbow’ trying to break into house shot dead by police | UK | News
A man reportedly armed with a crossbow has been shot dead by police in London, after it was reported he was trying to force his way into a house.
Officers descended on Bywater Place, Surrey Quays in Southwark, south London at around 5am today (January 30) after the man aged in his 30s was threatening people inside the building.
The Metropolitan Police said that unarmed officers tried to speak to him but were threatened, and when police marksmen arrived he had got into the building and was shot. He was given first aid but died at the scene. Two people in the building also suffered minor injuries.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct has launched an investigation into the incident, as is standard with a fatal police shooting.
Detective Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, responsible for policing Southwark, said: “My thoughts are with all those affected by this incident. I understand the local community will be concerned at the events that have taken place this morning. We will fully support the IOPC investigation into the full circumstances of what happened.”
