Nottingham stabbing victim Grace O’Malley Kumar’s terrifying last moments | UK | News

The heartbroken brother of 19-year-old Nottingham stabbing victim Grace O’Malley Kumar, has described how his sister’s “last moments were in pain”, shortly after she had tried to save her friend, Barnaby Webber, who also died during the horror triple killing last year.

Speaking to Sky News, Grace’s brother James said that it “really hurts him” to think that his sister was in pain at the time of her death, and added that “she was a hero, that was her character”.

He explained that “she tried her best to save her friend”, something he said was “very important for people to hear”, given she was a 19-year-old girl. “She tried her best and that’s who Grace was”, he said in the emotional interview.

Fighting back tears, James said: “Her smile. It was so contagious and I really miss it and knowing that I’ll never see that again is something that really hurts me. She was such a joyous person to be around. Her laughter, her excitement – she had such an unmatched just zest for life. She was so perfect. I miss everything – that sounds so cliched but I truly miss everything about her.”

James added that he is now wearing Grace’s earring, sleeps with her hockey top on his pillow and wears her clothes in an effort to “connect” with his beloved sister. He says he has been “completely lost” since her death, and that he will “never” forgive her killer.

Grace was killed trying to save her friend and fellow University of Nottingham student, Barnaby Webber. Valdo Calocane stabbed the pair in a spree of killings, as he also killed local school caretaker Ian Coates, 65. Calocane pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to manslaughter.

Calocane, who now goes by the name of Adam Mendes, was a paranoid schizophrenic at the time of the offences, according to three pyschiatrists who informed the judge. They said his condition “resulted in an abnormality of mental function… and an inability to exercise full control”. He has also admitted to attempting to murder three pedestrians who were hit by a van on June 13.
