Spanish holiday hotspot taken over by motorhomes leaving locals furious | World | News
The neighbourhood association in one of the most beautiful areas of southeastern Spain is demanding change after noticing a spike of campervans stationing in the car park of a popular shopping centre.
The Neighbourhood Association of Orihuela Costa in Action (AVOCA) has shared pictures showing several motorhomes parked inside the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre car park.
Large white and grey motorhomes can be seen parked near the shopping centre in the AVOCA snaps taken on December 13.
As the parking spots occupied by these vehicles are for cars, most of these motorhomes end up taking up multiple spaces.
Alongside depriving shoppers of parking space, AVOCA noted this area is not suitable for the stay of motorhomes as it has no basic utility services for their owners to use.
But the absence of a proper space for motorhomes and campervans in the immediate area leaves their drivers with little choice, AVOCA believes.
To bring this situation to an end, AVOCA has written to Orihuela council’s Department of Citizen Security, asking it to follow in the footsteps of nearby municipalities and set up a special serviced area on the coast.
The organisation said neighbouring municipalities provide motorhomes with parking spaces featuring “facilities like electricity, water, toilets and showers”.
AVOCA spokesperson Tomas Moreno said the group had first issued a request for a similar parking area in December 2022.
He said: “More than a year has passed since our initial request and we believe that it is increasingly necessary to address this action, since, in addition to benefiting its users, it would generate income for the Orihuela Council.”
The local administration has since changed following the Spanish election last May.
AVOCA said the Partido Popular, which has been leading Orihuela alongside Vox since the summer, proposed a motorhome park in its election manifesto, but hasn’t yet delivered it.
Orihuela Costa is a popular coastal region of the Costa Blanca, part of the Alicante province visited every year by millions of tourists.
Among the main attractions of the area are without doubt its sandy beaches – many of which have received the Blue Flag Certification, an indication of their high environmental and quality standard.
