This beautiful little steam train ride in the UK is so scenic that it might be the best in the whole country. The Settle-to-Carlisle line in England has been historically associated with efforts to preserve picturesque and historic railway sections.
The 73-mile train ride combines three delightful elements: one of the world‘s most scenic railway routes, and delectable cuisine, all pulled by a splendid locomotive.
The journey on the Settle & Carlisle line features notable locomotives such as the 6201 – The Princess Elizabeth steam engine, the iconic Flying Scotsman, and the majestic Tangmere steam engine. The excursion stands out as one of our premier luxury steam train day trips.
The Settle & Carlisle Steam Journey offers a spectacular scenic adventure, propelled by the power of steam along the picturesque Settle & Carlisle route.
The experience begins with a sparkling Bellini welcome reception, followed by a delightful brunch during the outward journey, complemented by morning coffee and tea.
Upon reaching Carlisle, passengers have the opportunity to explore the city at their leisure and capture a photograph of the impressive engine.
The return journey on the Northern Belle is marked by a Champagne reception, setting the stage for a sumptuous five-course dinner.
The British seasonal table d’hôte menu, featuring an award-winning cheese board, promises a culinary delight.
Each couple is treated to a specially selected bottle of wine to enhance the dining experience, and the journey concludes with teas, coffees, and delightful petit fours.

“We took the trip on a Saturday and were very disappointed with Mallaig there was very little open not even the cafe and restaurants the two that were open were full to capacity with the train being fully booked. It was a wet cold day so the majority of passengers made their way back to the train to wait for departure time. Mallaig wake up there is money to be made in such a short season. The rain stopped on the return journey and the scenery was beautiful.”
The second user commented: “Here for the week so had a day out via train. Very pleasant, friendly staff who were keen to share their knowledge, plus gave top tips for our trip to Carlisle this Wednesday – the ticket collector in particular, finished his shift before our return journey but thank you, local info appreciated for such a short amount of time. The trains were spotless and was a very scenic ride all the way – would be good for all seasons too. A very enjoyable journey.”
