Underrated market town is one of 2024’s best UK staycations | Travel News | Travel

Been to the Lake District and Cornwall? An underrated market town in Somerset might be just the spot for your next staycation.

While the UK has many incredible destinations to explore, there are a few lesser-known towns that often go under the radar.

New research from the team at Independent Cottages found that Taunton, a pretty market town in Somerset, could be the perfect destination for a 2024 staycation.

The team described Taunton as a “charming market town” that’s often overlooked in favour of better-known Somerset destinations.

A spokesperson said: “Whilst some of Somerset’s best-known settlements remain popular, including the beautiful city of Wells, coastal Minehead and medieval Dunster, it appears that Taunton has won the love of travellers recently.

“And given the town’s fascinating history and ample shopping opportunities, it’s not difficult to understand why this is the case.”

Not far from the coast, Taunton’s top attraction is found inside the town’s castle. The Museum of Somerset tells the county’s history from prehistoric times to the present day.

Tourists also loved Taunton’s Hestercombe Gardens which are located just outside the town. Hestercombe House also has a contemporary art gallery.

Visit Somerset states: “Taunton is a bustling, forward-looking town with excellent amenities, a good selection of independent and high street shops, distinctive restaurants, cafes and attractions, and a wealth of history, all whilst being surrounded by picturesque countryside.”

Tourists will find some of the town’s best shops at Bath Place Traders, a pedestrian shopping street packed with independent boutiques.

Taunton is also a great base to explore the surrounding countryside. Blackdown Hills and the Quantock Hills are easily reached from the market town.
