‘Bargain’ hidden gem destination in Europe where beer is just £1.75 | Travel News | Travel

If you’re looking to jet off on a purse-friendly holiday in the coming year, a new study has named a Bosnian city as one of the best destinations for a “budget” . The beautiful city of Sarajevo is nestled in the Sarajevo valley, in the middle of the Dinaric Alps. Though small, this idyllic mountain city is steeped in history.

Offering postcard-worthy views of tree-lined mountains, a large selection of museums commemorating local history and plenty of tours, the tourist-friendly capital is perfect for a weekend away. Perhaps one of its main draws for budget-seeking Britons, though, is that it is a great option for a cheap getaway according to experts from eurochange.

“Countries in South Eastern Europe such as Bosnia, Slovenia and Montenegro have absolutely stunning scenery, but are very cheap to travel to and stay,” explained Laura Evans-Fisk, head of digital engagement at eurochange.

Based on research conducted by eurochange, you could dine out for a three-course meal in the city for less than £11. And if you fancy a beer to go alongside your dinner, that will set you back an average of just £1.75. For comparison, in London, the average price of a bear in 2024 currently sits at £5.90 according to This figure drops only slightly to £4.21 nationally across the UK – proving just how much of a steal it is in Sarajevo.

Dinners and drinks aren’t the only low-cost offerings in the city, though.

Accommodation, on average, starts from £56 per person, per night, while flights can be found from as little as £48 (based on flight data in July 2024 when departing from London Stansted).

“Saravejo is known as the ‘Jerusalem of Europe’, and has one of the most diverse cultures on the continent, making it one of the most intriguing cities you can visit. It is one of the only places where you can visit a Mosque, a Catholic church, an Eastern Orthodox church and a synagogue in one place,” explained Laura.

“Tucked inside a long, thin valley and surrounded by forested mountains, the city is a picture-perfect backdrop.

“Its broad mix of cultural influences means its architecture is also absolutely beautiful, and its restaurant scene is an eclectic mix of Turkish and Bosnian-inspired offerings. And, with prices averaging at just £10 per person for a three-course meal, your money really does go far here.”

Though there are pricier options in the city, with some of its highest-rated hotels coming in at over £100 a night according to, there are also those which are on the lower end of the scale.

At the time of writing, a quick search shows you can snap up a stay at the three-star rated Hotel Grand just 250 metres from Sarajevo Central Station from £32.40 a night (based on dates in June 2024).

Or, reliable hotel chain ibis Styles Sarajevo has one-night stays from £71 in the summer months, based on the search results.

If you’re looking to fly to Saravejo from the UK, direct flights depart from London with both and Wizz Air, both of which are known for their incredibly cheap tickets. At the time of writing, based on Skyscanner data, you can get tickets from London to Saravejo from just £28.
