Road trippers will see a lot more of their destination and it’s also a great bonding experience for family and friends.

If you’re looking for a budget holiday this year, there’s an incredible road trip route that ticks off three countries and won’t break the bank.

Start the trip in Lithuania before travelling through Latvia to Estonia. The three Baltic countries are affordable destinations for Brits with hotels on offer for less than £30 per person per night in each country.

This road trip kicks off in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, although tourists can attempt the route from either direction. While in Vilnius, take a wander through the city’s old town or visit the KGB Museum.

From Vilnius, head to Kaunas which is Lithuania’s second-largest city. The city is home to a curious Devil Museum and many of its buildings have UNESCO Heritage status.

After Kaunas, visit Palanga, one of Lithuania’s top Baltic resorts. The beach has golden sand and there’s also a pretty pier.

Make another coastal stop but this time across the border in Latvia. Ventspils has a pretty old town so spend an afternoon wandering its cobblestone streets.

From Ventspils, it’s around a two and a half hour drive to Latvia’s capital city, Riga. Make sure to visit the city’s food hall and admire its Baltic architecture at the House of The Black Heads.

Riga is also close to Jurmala, one of Latvia’s top seaside resorts and a budget beach choice for Britons.

Head to Tallinn from Riga or make a stop at Parnu, an Estonian seaside resort enroute. If you decide to get to Tallinn straight away, it takes just under four and a half hours in the car.

Tallinn perhaps has the prettiest Old Town of the three Baltic capitals and make sure to check out the views from Toompea Hill. If you do want to continue your trip, Stockholm and Helsinki are both reachable via an inexpensive ferry.

All three countries use the euro and British tourists must display a UK sticker if they are driving their own vehicle in the Baltic states.
