The price of holidays can add up, but even if you’ve had to shell out some of your savings on flights, some destinations promise a much cheaper holiday upon arrival. That means everything from hotel stays to dinners out can be massively cheaper than other destinations. And one person who knows a thing or two about the world of travel is Renee Bruns, one of Skyscanner’s new Everywhere Agents.

A world record holder for wheelchair travel, Renee rediscovered her love for humanity after spending a year globetrotting alone. As a full-time wheelchair user, she found solace in local cultures. When asked where the destination she thinks travellers can get “the most bang for their buck”, Renee pointed to Phnom Penh in Cambodia.

She explained: “Phnom Penh is incredibly inexpensive. You can experience the culture and local sights including the Wat Phnom Temple for as little as £1. Coupled with the amazing people and culture, you can’t go wrong.”

Phnom Penh is the capital and most populous city of Cambodia, known for its many beautiful temples and cultural sites, many of which can be visited for a very low fee. The cost of living in Cambodia is far lower than the UK and so it can seem very cheap for British visitors to the nation. According to Tripadvisor: “Budget-minded travellers will appreciate Phnom Penh’s reasonably priced hotel rooms.”

Covering an area of 345 sq km, Phnom Penh is situated in the south-central region of Cambodia, where the Tonle Sap, Mekong and Bassac rivers meet.

The city is a vibrant, bustling hotspot but there are plenty of things to keep tourists busy. According to Tripadvisor, the top-rated thing to do in Phnom Penh is Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. Though it remembers a traffic period in history, the museum has a positive aim to encourage peace. “Such a moving experience in this bustling city,” commented a British tourist who previously visited the museum.

The Royal Palace, which is still the dwelling place of the king, is also among the top-rated things to visit according to Tripadvisor. This palace contains the Silver Pagoda, whose floor is made up of 5329 silver tiles, each weighing 1.125 kilograms.

If you are unsure of what to do, there are many half and full-day tours of Phnom Penh, taking in many of the top-rated destinations, with prices starting from as low as £15.31.

Tripadvisor recommends Phnom Penh for its “reasonably priced hotel rooms”, with even some of the website’s top-rated stays well within purse-friendly realms. According to Tripadvisor, some of the best hotels start from just £10 a night.

The website has created a list of the top-rated hotels based on the experience of previous guests, with The Peninsula Phnom Penh coming in at number one.

Located in Phnom Penh, a short distance from the Embassies and Financial district area, The Peninsula Phnom Penh offers accommodations with complimentary Wi-Fi throughout, a shared lounge Clubhouse and free private indoor parking on site. Boasting floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking skyscrapers and the Mekong and Tonle Sap Rivers, all rooms are equipped with a complete range of in-room facilities.

The hotel has scored a five out of five rating based on traveller reviews. Though it is not the cheapest place to stay in the area, some rooms can be purchased for as little as £77 a night depending on when you book which is extremely cheap compared to similar hotels in the UK.

If you’re really looking to save money, and aren’t bothered about luxury, then 139 Guesthouse is a simple but very affordable option with rooms from £8 a night.

One Irish holidaymaker who stayed at the accommodation left a review stating: “Very friendly staff. Good value for money. Bed was comfortable and bedroom was very clean”.
