Leicester star Hamza Choudhury banned and fined for drink-driving on wrong side of road | Football | Sport

Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury has been fined £20,000 for drink-driving on the wrong side of the road in his wife’s Range Rover. The footballer was found to have consumed double the alcohol limit when he was taken to a police station in Nottingham in the early hours of January 19.

Choudhury pleaded guilty to driving while double the legal alcohol limit and careless driving at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning. Police dashcam footage of the 26-year-old being pulled over in Nottingham in the early hours of Friday January 19 was shown to the court.

The former England U21 international has a previous drink-driving conviction from 2017 and will subsequently face a mandatory minimum three-year driving ban, prosecutor Ben Payne told the court.

Choudhury was given a 40-month driving ban, ordered to pay a £2,000 victim surcharge and £85 in prosecution costs. He was told his 40-month ban would be reduced by around nine months if he completes a drink-driving rehabilitation course.

The court was told that Choudhury had shared a taxi home from a restaurant but decided to return in his wife’s car after realising he had left his phone. A charge of failing to cooperate with a roadside breathalyser test was withdrawn.

District Judge Sunil Khanna told Choudhury: “I do accept that this will impact you and that you are extremely embarrassed by what has occurred.”

Choudhury has been a regular feature of Leicester’s promotion push in the Championship this season. Having spent the whole of the Foxes’ surprise Premier League relegation campaign on loan at Watford, the player has been able to contribute to their fight to return to the top-flight.

Head coach Enzo Maresca has named Choudhury in the squad for all 34 Championship matches. He has played in 25 games, including nine as a starter.

Maresca has used Choudhury in midfield and at full-back. Choudhury, who reportedly earns £12,000 per week, featured sparingly for the Midlands outfit when they were in the Premier League.

He has played 115 times for the club and won the FA Cup in 2021. He then played in the triumphant Community Shield team several months later.

However, Choudhury missed out on lifting the Premier League in the famous 2015-16 title success. Aged 17 at the time, he spent the second half of that season on loan at League One club Burton Albion and did not play his first game for the Foxes until over a year later.
