“But he has other strengths in his game. Sometimes, it’s very easy to criticise a player, but also because he has high expectations because of the last season or two when he scored lots of goals.

“So it’s a little bit of a compliment towards him, and Man United want to see more of it. There’s nothing wrong with defending yourself.

“But if there are people close around you saying, ‘well, sometimes, you maybe need to do a bit more’, there is nothing wrong with that. He’s learning, and as a top player, there’s always improvement to get better.”

Rashford will be keen to push on from his derby goal and help United make strides towards the Champions League spots in the coming months. Next up is Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday.
