With many tourists looking to book their next holiday, some are thinking about travelling to a city that few others would consider.

The tourism blog Travel Addicts have recommended tourists looking for a complete change of scenery should visit Riga, the capital of Latvia, with flights often taking no longer than three hours.

Laura Longwell, writer at Travel Addicts, noted that the city offers a wide selection of history and culture in such a small amount of space.

She explained: “Riga is a brilliant mix of the old and the new. At any moment on a walk through this lovely city, you could glimpse a 700-year-old church, next to a modern store, next to a building that was reconstructed to look old.

“This blend of architecture and interests means there are lots of fun things to do in Riga, Latvia, and there’s something different in every square.”

In particular, Travel Addicts highlighted that anyone thinking about taking a city break in Riga should take a visit to the Central Market.

Whilst it sounds like something that could be found in any major city, the Central Market is the largest marketplace in Europe, serving around 80,000 people each day.

Opened in 1930, the indoor market uses former aircraft hangers to sell all manner of local foods, flowers, and souvenirs of the trip.

Visitors to Riga looking to learn about some of the city’s history were encouraged to look at the House of the Blackheads, a building first constructed in the 14th Century.

Featuring vibrant teracotta and white walls and incredibly detailed sculpturing throughout, the building was initially destroyed during World War Two, with the ruling Soviet Union ordering remains to be removed in the following years.

However, once Latvia became an independent country again in the 1990s, it was rebuilt to its original standards.

Finally, Travel Addicts suggested that tourists looking to take some good photos of the city’s stunning surroundings should go for a walk through the Old Town.

Riga’s Old Town is an UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring narrow, car-free streets and a selection of squares covered in flowers and monuments.

The company noted that travellers looking to visit the Old Town should see Livu Square in particular, home to outdoor cafes, the Russian Drama Theatre and the Cat House, a building which features two copper statues of angry-looking felines on the rooftop.
