The UK county named the ‘best’ for seaside towns – and it’s not Cornwall, Devon or Dorset | Travel News | Travel

An unexpected UK county has been named the best for seaside towns, and it’s not Cornwall, Devon or Dorset.

Rough Guides compiled a list of the country’s 30 best coastal spots, and one county took home the most with three entrants on the list, making up 10 percent of the grand total.

Kent in southeast England overlooks the River Thames estuary to the north and the English Channel to the south. It is the closest county to continental Europe.

Three of its seaside towns were on Rough Guides’ list – Whitstable, Folkestone and Margate. Whitstable was described as a “bohemian seaside escape” for those in the capital, with Londoners flocking down in the summer months.

The town has a “defiantly bohemian atmosphere” with a “vibrant High Street” and “colourful, Instagram-worthy beach huts”.

It is known for its local oysters, which have been famous since Roman times. Every summer there is an Oyster Festival to celebrate the area’s seafood.

Folkestone was called a town that’s turned around, going from “shabby” to chic. Rough Guides said it had “reinvented itself” with a creative quarter as a hub for artists’ workships, galleries and shops.

There is even a town-wide art exhibition every year which sees street corners, community centres and beaches covered in installations.

Margate, unlike many other British seaside towns, is not a “chocolate-box seaside resort” or “twee”. It was called “pretty darn cool” by Rough Guides.

The Old Town has been recently regenerated with narrow lanes packed full of independent shops and cafes. The Dreamland Amusement Park has also reopened fo traditional fairground fun.

It is also popular among London day-trippers, ideal for those “seeking the seaside with a hipster edge”, with “just as much traditional beachside fun to get nostalgic over”.

Also on the list of the 30 best beaches in the UK were the Devon seaside resorts of Ilfracombe and Salcombe made it onto the list, while Bournemouth and Weymouth in Dorset also came inside the top 30. In Cornwall, the beautiful towns of Padstow and St Ives were 10th and 29th on the ranking respectively, but with three entries on the list, is Kent the best country in the UK for seaside towns?
