It’s that time of year when British holidaymakers are eyeing up their next summer holiday. From the Costa del Sol to the Algarve, us Brits love nothing more than a beach break.

But there’s so many destinations to choose from, it’s hard to know which to pick.

And if you want to head out of Europe for somewhere further affield, the options are endless.

Luckily, we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 best beaches across the globe, and four are in the same country.

Conde Nast Traveller named the 34 best beaches in the world, and of those 34, 10 stood out as being among the crème de la crème. In tenth is Die Plaat in the Walker Bay Nature Reserve in South Africa.

This short stretch of sand is reportedly near South Africa’s whale capital and is also home to Klipgat Cave. This is filled with bats now, but in the past it was the home of late Middle Stone-aged residents, some of whom left their tools behind.

In ninth place is New Zealand’s entry onto the list with Awaroa on the country’s South Island. This beach, say Conde Nast, is most commonly reached by kayak or boat. When it came up for sale eight years ago, residents bought the beach to keep in public ownership.

In eighth place is the first of four entries from Australia with Noosa Beach. Located near the city of Brisbane, it is a mix of natural beauty and commercial entrepreneurship. It features a surf club with boutiques and designer restaurants.

In seventh is France’s Dune du Pilat which features one of Europe’s tallest sand dunes. Around an hour from the city of Bordeaux, it too is near an urban centre. Furthermore, once one has sampled this beach, there are many others nearby to try on a beach holiday.

Australia’s Mona Vale Beach is in sixth place and it too is near a city, just an hour’s drive from the country’s capital, Sydney. The beach is split in two by a large rock, but the main beach, popular with local joggers, is a whole kilometre (0.625 miles) of white sand.

Slipping into the top five is Indonesia’s Ora Beach on the country’s north coast of Seram Island. Relatively underpopulated, the island is host to an area known as the Little Maldives due to the type of beaches nearby.

Just short of the podium in fourth is Australia’s third entry in the top 10, Wategos Beach. One of the country’s most popular beaches, it has become famous for the celebrities who have trodden its sands including Nicole Kidman and Matt Damon.

Taking bronze is Scotland’s Breckon Beach. Protected from the icy winds, the beach is famous for being near a stretch of coastline where several boats have met their demise off Scotland’s coastline. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful spot for the brave beachgoer.

In second is the much warmer Honopu Beach in Kauai, Hawaii. One of the best ways to reach the beach is by water meaning determined visitors need to swim in from the boat parked offshore. The valley in which the beach is situated is also believed to be spiritual.

Australia’s Palm Cove Beach takes the title as best beach in the world for it’s partnership of palm trees and crisp white sands. Situated near the northeastern city of Cairns, the local town is home to just 2,000 people.

As a result, this world-leading stretch of sand is rarely filled with tourists and perfect for spotting local wildlife in the water.
