Axel Hernborg, founder of Tripplo.com, noted that whilst flight delays are inevitable, tourists can reduce the likely wait by looking at the most efficient airports.

He explained: “While it’s never ideal for any of your flights to be delayed, you’ll likely experience it at some point, especially if you’re a frequent flyer. That being said, it’s interesting to see the big difference in the length of delays at certain UK airports, and it will be worth seeing if this correlates with the number of cancellations at each of these airports as well.

“With the summer holidays also coming up, whether the amount of cancellations we have seen across the UK in recent years keeps up will be worth noting too.”

According to Tripplo.com, the airport with the worst track record for delays during 2023 was Aberdeen, with tourists waiting an average of 20.7 minutes longer than planned to get on their flight.

The company highlighted that December was the worst month for overdue flights, with 26.04 minutes being the typical wait period for travellers.

Isle of Man Airport was also particularly busy during the 12-month period, with holidaymakers facing an average delay of 16.22 minutes.

Some of the country’s most popular airports also featured high up on the list, with four of London’s six within the top 10.

London Gatwick was the capital’s worst airport for delays, with passengers typically waiting 15.47 more minutes than expected.

Luton flyers also faced long waiting times in 2023, with travellers again facing the biggest waiting times in December at 19.76 minutes.
