World’s most dangerous road dubbed ‘Death Road’ just 3m wide with 1,000 sheer drops | Travel News | Travel

This road in dubbed ‘Death Road,’ has claimed thousands of lives and was once known as the world’s most dangerous road.

The road stretches from the high city of La Paz to the warm Yungas valleys and then down to the Amazon.

It’s extremely narrow at just three metres wide and has many sharp turns and blind spots, and sometimes waterfalls come down the rocks around it.

There are very few safety barriers to protect cars from falling down the sheer vertical drops.

Along the road, drivers can see little memorials with white crosses, flowers, and old photos of those who sadly died.

It was known for its high risk, with between 200 and 300 people dying on it each year.

Many vehicles fell off the road every year, and with drops of up to 1,000m over the edge, the number of deaths reached hundreds annually.

One of the worst accidents happened on July 24, 1983 when a bus veered off the Yungas Road and into a canyon, killing more than 100 passengers.

In December 1999, eight Israeli tourists were killed in a jeep accident on that road.
