Zelensky says ‘multiple killed, injured’ in Russian strike during Greek PM visit | World | News

A Russian missle striked the Ukrainian port city of Odesa shortly before a meeting between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, according to reports.

The is said to have blast occurred just 150 metres away from the building where the Greek delegation was awaiting the Ukrainian leader ahead of a planned meeting, Greek publication Protothema, quoting State Minister Stavros Papastavrou and official government sources reported.

It’s thought Zelensky was travelling to the talks in a presidential motorcade at the time of the strike.

The leaders went ahead with their meeting as planned, and gave a short press conference afterwards, with Zelensky reportedly declaring that at least three people had been killed in the nearby blast, with another three injured.

Meanwhile, Mitsotakis reiterated his country’s support for Ukraine, saying: “My presence here reflects the respect of the entire free world for your people and underlines Greece’s commitment to remain by your side.”

A spokesperson for the Greek PM told Protothema: “There is no issue with the security of the Prime Minister and the Greek mission,” and Papastavrou confirmed: “We are all fine.”

The group later paid a visit to a residential building in the city, where 12 people, including five children, had been killed in a Russian drone strike Saturday.

Wednesday’s strike in Odesa came only hours after Vladimir Putin‘s forces launched a blitz of overnight drone strikes on locations across Ukraine, its largest wave of aerial attacks in weeks.

Ukrainian’s air force said its air defences shot down 38 out of 42 Russian drones, but those that escaped destruction – and debris from the ones shot down, hit power infrastructure, caused damage to residential and commercial buildings, and injured at least seven people, according to officials.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces reportedly carried out an overnight drone attack of their own, targeting a metal plant in the Russian region of Kursk.

“Today another attack on the Kursk region was carried out by Ukraine,” Kursk governor Roman Starovoyt said in a video message posted on his Telegram channel on Wednesday.

“A drone attacked a fuel and lubricants warehouse in Zheleznogorsk. There are fires in the area right now,” he added.

Kyiv is yet to comment on the attack.

In recent months, Ukraine‘s forces have unleashed a wave of drone attacks on Russian energy facilities, in an attempt to target the country’s vital energy and gas sector which it says Russia uses to fuel its military operations in Ukraine.
