Jannik Sinner thrashes Grigor Dimitrov to win third title of the year at Miami Open | Tennis | Sport

Jannik Sinner continued his dominant reign in 2024 by winning his third title of the year – the first player to reach the milestone. The world No. 3 dropped one set all tournament, beating Grigor Dimitrov 6-3 6-1 to lift the trophy at the Miami Open, sending a strong statement to the rest of the ATP Tour.

Coming into the final, Dimitrov and Sinner were both seeking a second career Masters 1000 crown under very different circumstances. Dimitrov’s only Masters title came at the Cincinnati Open in 2017, during his career-best season. That year, he lifted four trophies including the ATP Finals.

He went over six years without winning another title, finally ending his drought at the Brisbane International in January. Sinner won his first Masters last August in Canada and, since then, has become unstoppable. The Italian had only lost one match all year coming into the final, with titles at the Australian Open and Rotterdam under his belt.

It was clear who the crowd was pulling for as chants of “Grigor” echoed around the Hard Rock Stadium. But Sinner ignored them, saving a break point before breaking the Dimitrov serve with a stunning passing shot. The 32-year-old stayed hot on his heels, saving two more break points in a game lasting well over five minutes.

Sinner proved relentless and had two more break points – this time set points – in the world No. 12’s next service game. It was another passing shot that delivered the blow and he took the opener 6-3 after 42 minutes, edging closer to a third title of the season.

The world No. 3 only grew into the match as Dimitrov struggled to keep up with his opponent, getting broken early in the second. The Bulgarian had no answers for Sinner’s brilliance as the errors started to creep up and he misfired an overhead to relinquish another break.
