Ljubljana is a ‘budget’ gem with dinner from £21 and beer is £1.38 | Travel News | Travel
Fancy a city break but don’t want to break the bank? A study has named some of the cheapest destinations in Europe to enjoy a holiday, and one nation nestled in Central Europe offers a rich history and beautiful surroundings for a cut of the price of some other metropolises around the world.
Though Ljubljana is the capital and largest city in Slovenia, tourists may actually be able to enjoy a rather purse-friendly holiday here.
“Prices here are particularly low,” said Laura Evans-Fisk, head of digital engagement at eurochange, who compiled the data.
“Especially for food and drink,” she added. “A beer can cost as little as €1.62, what’s not to love?”
The data showed that the average bottle of beer will set you back approximately €1.62 which equates to roughly £1.38, while a three-course meal is, on average, just €25 (approximately £21.37). If you compare that to some of the average prices in the UK, the cost is particularly tempting.
For example, according to data from Finder.com, the average cost of a beer nationally in the UK is £4.21. In the capital city of London, this jumps up to a rather eye-watering £5.90.
Flights and accommodation can also be snapped up on a budget, particularly if you can be flexible about your dates of travel. On average, eurochange found that flights between London Gatwick and Ljubljana are just £154.
Both easyJet and British Airways offer direct flights to Ljubljana, though you will have to depart from London. According to Skyscanner, at the time of writing, some of the cheapest options are available in April from £90. Alternatively, if you prefer to depart from a regional UK airport, you can take a connecting flight.
Like most capital cities, Ljubljana has high-end, luxury accommodation options on offer, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get your hands on a deal. Boutique Hostel Angel, in the heart of the city, has been ranked as “superb” by Booking.com reviews and has one-night stays on offer from just £19 per night.
Or, if you prefer a hotel experience, one of the cheapest top-rated hotels in the city is ONE66 hotel, similarly ranked as “superb”, with stays from £57 per night.
There is also plenty to keep you busy in this beautiful and ornate city. “Located in the heart of Slovenia, Ljubljana is a great place to visit, with easy access to the rest of the country for day trips and excursions,” said Laura.
“The cultural and political heart of the country, Ljubljana has a gorgeous old town to explore, filled with pretty streets and beautiful Baroque buildings. “
