Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney rue missing out on Wrexham promotion | Football | Sport

Wrexham won promotion to League One on Saturday – but Hollywood owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds were nowhere to be seen at the Racecourse Ground. The Welsh side won 6-0 against Forest Green Rovers as results elsewhere went their way to secure a second straight promotion.

McElhenney and Reynolds were both in attendance last year as the club won the National League title but neither made the trip to Wrexham this weekend. Their absence is likely because the team needed other results to go their way as opposed to 12 months ago when a win over Boreham Wood was enough to take the title.

This time around, alongside their win over Forest Green, the Welsh club needed Barrow and MK Dons to drop points. Both did, as they lost to Gillingham and Mansfield Town.

With the win, Mansfield need two more points from three matches to join Wrexham in League One next season. Stockport County were the other team to secure promotion Saturday afternoon and will pip Wrexham to the title with two more points from its final three matches.

Despite missing out on the promotion part, McElhenney and Reynolds marked the occasion with emotional social media posts. “A few years ago, if you had told me I would be crying tears of joy over a football match taking place in North Wales, you would be [Rob McElhenney],” Reynolds shared on X, formerly Twitter.

“Congrats to [Wrexham AFC] and to my co-chairman in crime. Double up the town! This is the ride of our lives.”

He also responded to a message from a fan who proclaimed, “the town are forever in your debt,” and paid tribute to his late father. “Absolutely gutted my dad can’t be here to witness this after the miles we put in over the years,” the fan shared alongside a photo of his father holding up a red and white scarf that reads: “WREXHAM ARE MAGIC.”

Reynolds replied: “Neil, your dad knew many years ago what Rob and I – and the rest of the world – are only recently discovering. Wrexham is indeed magic. We are in HIS debt and many thousands of supporters like him.”

The actor also expressed his emotions in an Instagram Story post. “My soul feels like it’s left my body,” the post read. “Unbelievable moment for the town, the club and hundreds of people behind the scenes doing the hard stuff.”

He added: “And pray for Wayne Jones at the [Turf Pub]. That place will be thumping for the next one million years.”
