Man Utd: Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho under fire as Paul Scholes calls out duo | Football | Sport

Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has accused Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho of letting their standards drop in a bizarre and now-deleted social media post. Scholes told the young Red Devils duo that they cannot train properly while wearing hoods.

Mainoo and Garnacho have been two of United’s best performers this season, providing rare highlights in a poor season for Erik ten Hag’s side. But that has not shielded them from the wrath of Scholes.

The pair were pictured in a recent training session wearing the hoods of their United-branded hoodies. It is unclear if they were taking part in a drill at the time of the snap, or if they were simply socialising.

Former midfielder Scholes was unhappy with the two academy graduates, though, and even went as far as suggesting that they were letting standards drop by wearing their hoods. The 11-time Premier League winner singled the youngsters out for criticism before later deleting the post.

Scholes shared the picture on his Instagram story before ripping into Mainoo and Garnacho. “Don’t mind hats and gloves but no way can you train properly with your hoods up,” Scholes wrote. “Standards begin on the training pitch… Bye!”

The post appears to have been quickly deleted but was screenshotted and shared across social media platforms.

Mainoo has started United’s last 11 Premier League matches in a terrific breakthrough campaign, scoring a stunning goal in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool last weekend. The 18-year-old made his senior England debut in March and is under consideration for a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024.

Garnacho, 19, has 10 direct goal contributions in 29 Premier League appearances this season. He has been United’s most consistent wide man, with Marcus Rashford and Antony struggling for form.

Last week, Ten Hag highlighted United’s young players – including centre-back Willy Kambwala – as proof that while this season has been underwhelming, the future of the club is bright. “I am very pleased, very happy and it is another signal and message of the future of Manchester United,” the Dutchman said.

“This team, the squad has high potential and if we get more players available, especially in the backline… then the future will be very good.”

United have faced criticism from several high-profile former players for a poor campaign. The Red Devils are sixth in the Premier League, 11 points off fourth- and fifth-placed Tottenham and Aston Villa.
