Ordino: The beautiful medieval village that’s one of the tiniest in Europe | Travel News | Travel
Among the many wonders to explore in Europe, there is a village sitting in the heart of the sixth-smallest state in the continent.
Ordino is a medieval village in Andorra. It lies on the foot slopes of Casamanya, a 9,029-foot tall mountain offering outstanding panoramic views from its summit.
Lined with picturesque stone houses, this village is home to less than 5,000 people – and is considered a gem for its ability to integrate modern society into a natural environment while preserving its rural traditions.
In 2020, the UN Tourism – an agency of the United Nations promoting responsible, sustainable and accessible tourism – designated this village a Biosphere Reserve – an area promoting “solutions reconciling the conservation of biodiversity with its sustainable use”, according to UNESCO.
Despite being tiny, this village offers state-of-the-art facilities and plenty of experiences for tourists venturing into Andorra.
Those keen to visit the medieval village should head to Casa Areny Museum – the only manor house in Andorra that has survived the tests of time.
Belonging to one of the important families in Andorran history, this museum offers a glimpse into the past of the tiny state.
In Ordino, the local traditions and culture are regularly celebrated through festivals – including the Les Falles and the Feast of Sant Pere as well as the Ordino Clàssic Music Festival.
Once tourists have explored the town they can move to visit the wider local parish, also named Ordino, as it offers plenty to do.
Depending on which season holidaymakers venture to Andorra, they can head to the Ordino Arcalís ski resort or visit the high-mountain Tristaina Lakes and Sorteny National Park.
Other parts of Andorra, which has a total area of 180.55 square miles, are also worth visiting – including the large natural spring complex in Caldea.
Moreover, the summer months, when the weather is sunny and temperatures range between 15 to 26C, are ideal for cycling and walking through the many hiking trails.
Given the country is sandwiched between France and Spain, it can be easily reached from Barcelona, Girona and Toulouse.
