Rasmus Hojlund rubs salt in Liverpool’s wounds after Atalanta drubbing | Football | Sport

Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund has celebrated Atalanta’s surprise 3-0 victory over Liverpool. Hojlund, who signed for the Red Devils from Atalanta last summer, would have been an interested viewer of his former side’s Europa League visit to Merseyside.

Liverpool struggled to get out of first gear against the Italians. Former West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca struck twice at Anfield before Maria Pasalic all but ended Jurgen Klopp’s chances of winning a final European trophy before he departs Liverpool this summer.

Hojlund’s 16 goals for Atalanta earned him his move to United nearly 12 months ago. The 21-year-old clearly has fond memories from his time at the club, and was quick to mark Thursday’s victory on social media.

He shared Atalanta’s Instagram story confirming the full-time result to his own page and added the caption “Mola Mia” with a lion emoji. The caption is a Bergamese phrase that roughly translates to ‘never give up’ or ‘stay strong’.

Hojlund has enjoyed a decent first season at United, scoring 13 goals. Although only seven of those strikes have come in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Klopp conceded that Liverpool’s first Anfield defeat in 14 months was a “low point” in the club’s season. The Reds will go to Bergamo next week in hope of completing another historic comeback, but the chances seem unlikely with such a gruelling Premier League title run-in to come.

“It was a really bad game, oh my God,” Klopp said, while insisting that all focus is now on preparing for Sunday’s game against Crystal Palace.

“We started well, really well and then didn’t continue. They broke, they scored and we just lost the plot a little bit. We were here and there in midfield, I didn’t recognise it.
