The UK’s ‘most beautiful’ seaside town is also Britain’s favourite ‘prettiest staycation’ | Travel News | Travel

Salcombe is a picturesque coastal town in Devon, England, and has become famous for its sheltered golden beach and sits at the mouth of the Kingsbridge Estuary, a waterway that runs into the English Channel.

This pretty seaside town is known for its natural beauty due to its incredible views of the ocean while being surrounded by lush hills and woodland forest as the town lies within an Area of Outstanding Beauty.

The town has been described as one of Britain’s ‘most beautiful’ towns by CN Traveler due to its “enhanced” wild purple fuchsias and dolphin sighting giving the area a fairy-tale-like atmosphere.

They wrote: “Salcombe is a pretty cluster of stone and pastel-coloured houses built along terraces on a steep slope. They overlook wonderfully blue waters that are studded with white boats.”

It has also been named the prettiest staycation destination after research analysed Instagram data to find the UK’s favourite location loved by Brits.

Salcombe is surrounded by three beaches, each with its distinct atmosphere. North Sands is the perfect family getaway and South Sands is known for its ferry and cafes.

East Portlemouth beaches are farther away but worth the journey but worth it as it is the quietest area made up of several small beaches. It holds incredible views and is the perfect spot for a hike.

Salcombe is the perfect place for a holiday for history lovers as the ruins of the fortress Salcombe Castle, also known as Fort Charles, sits just off the North Sands beach and is an unforgettable sight.

It was originally built by King Henry VIII to protect against French raids but was also raided during the English Civil War.

Another place to visit is the Salcombe Maritime Museum where visitors can learn about the area’s rich shipping history, as a shipwreck from the Bronze Age with weapons and jewellery inside has been discovered near the area.

Sitting at the peak of Salcombe is the quirky Overbeck’s House and Gardens which has a range of exhibitions to explore run by the National Trust.

The home was first owned by the eccentric inventor, scientist and brewer Otto Overbeck where visitors can also learn about his works and life.

Salcombe is also known for its wide range of water activities such as dingy sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, waterskiing, coasteering, and wildlife watching.

Visitors can also hire boats and even be given lessons so they can have fun no matter their experience.

However, after a fun day of activities and sightseeing, it is best to finish the day at Salcombe Dairy, which is said to hold the tastier ice cream in South Devon.

This family-owned establishment makes its ice cream with milk from local farms first thing in the morning and you can also purchase award-winning chocolate and truffles from the store.

No matter what you decide to do, Salcombe is a beautiful place with plenty to explore for anyone searching for a relaxing beachside holiday.
