Tourist moans as crowds ‘spoil their entire experience’ | Travel News | Travel

Overtourism is a problem in many of Europe’s leading holiday destinations. While big cities can usually deal with a high number of visitors, smaller hotspots may feel overcrowded.

One tourist has taken to Reddit to share how crowds ruined their experience on Italy’s Amalfi Coast.

‘Geedman’ said: “Was there last week and the crowd in Positano spoiled the entire experience. It is gorgeous to look at, but the crowds are beyond anything that the city can hold.”

A cliffside coastal village, Positano has been described as one of the world’s most beautiful destinations.

However, the small village can become incredibly overcrowded in summer with huge numbers of tourists descending to enjoy the beach.

Another person said: “All the spots on the Amalfi Coast can only hold so many people before it starts to feel very crowded and unpleasant.”

One person opined: “It’s not just the crowds, but you have to understand there is the tiniest road in and out, where traffic comes to less than a crawl for hours in peak season as the road nearly doesn’t accommodate oncoming traffic.”

The Amalfi Coast sometimes implements traffic rules during summer where cars are regulated by their number plate.

A tourist even advised other people not to go, saying: “Don’t go. Do not. The number of tourists is insane.

“Arrived in Amalfi – people everywhere. All restaurants – full tables, bad reviews and too expensive. 10/10 would never return again.”

One person described Amalfi as “one of the most beautiful places on earth” but said it was also too crowded.

If tourists are desperate to visit the Amalfi Coast, they’re best travelling during the shoulder season when there are fewer crowds.

They could also try exploring the villages in the early morning or late evening when the cruise tourists have returned to the ship.

Experts recommend taking public transport rather than attempting to drive to the Amalfi Coast villages.
