UK storm forecast: Brits to be battered by freezing winds | Weather | News

Today the UK’s weather will take a turn for the worse just 24 hours after large swathes of the country enjoyed warm weather.

On Saturday, temperatures in the south and south east of the UK rose close to 20 degrees as the UK basked in April sunshine.

On Sunday, however, parts of the UK will once again be struck by chilly winds, icy rain, and low temperatures during one of the most meteorologically changeable months of the year.

Forecasts have suggested that the weather will be far wetter today, particularly in northern parts of England and in some coastal areas.

Speaking ahead of today’s weather, meteorologist Ellie Glaisyer warned it would be a colder start for many this morning with lower peak temperatures compared to Saturday.

She warned that a low-pressure system in the north of the country was the reason behind the sudden change in conditions.

Ms Glaisyer explained: “Lower pressure sits out towards the north of the UK, slowly sinking its way southwards – for the rest of the weekend and into the start of the working week, it will bring with it some colder north-westerly winds.”

Ms Glaisyer’s predictions for today are reflected in the Met Office’s short-term forecast with warnings about the impact of the wind on how conditions will feel.

The Met Office said: “Dry and breezy for many in southern parts with hazy sunshine, whilst showers become more frequent and blustery across the north.

“Isolated thunder and hail continue, turning wintry over the hills. Feeling cold, especially in the strong winds.”

The colder weather follows a baking day in the UK with temperatures averaging around 14 degrees and peaking at 21.4 degrees in Writtle, Essex.

Speaking to the Express earlier this week about the sudden change in weather conditions, weather expert Jim Dale confirmed that things would keep changing during this part of the month.

Mr Dale said: “The weather conditions are likely to swing up and down in the coming days.

“Sometimes it will stay quite warm, for instance, this Friday and Saturday, and back to being a bit cooler on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.”
